Frequently Asked Questions
Please read this section for more information about how things work before contacting us for general inquiries. Thank you so much for your interest in Happy Hound Excursions!
How do I know if my dog is ready for pack walks?
Fill out our inquiry form! If we think your dog seems like a good fit, we will start by scheduling a free initial assessment to get to know you and your dog and determine whether pack walks are right for you. We work with dogs on an individual basis first to give them the tools and understanding they need to fully enjoy the pack and everything it has to offer. Many dogs who have struggled with over-excitement, lack of socialization, and reactivity are able to successfully integrate with the pack.
We teach our pack members:
- how to walk on a loose leash
- how to relax in the car
- basic commands such as sit, stay, leave it.
If your dog needs extra support before joining the pack, or we think that pack walking may not be the best fit, we can provide recommendations for other services. Our priority is that your dog’s unique needs are met, be it with us or another trusted professional service.
Your Questions Answered
What is the pack walk schedule?
Pack walks are offered Monday through Friday, with the exception of national holidays. We do not offer pack walks on the weekends.
Walks are typically one-two hours in duration, with dogs out of the house for 3-5 hours, depending on where you reside on our driving route. Note that this is a mobile service and free pick ups and drop offs are included in our pricing.
Depending on weather conditions, we may cut the duration of actual walking and spend remaining time allowing the dog to relax and enjoy safe socialization and play time.
Do you offer drop-in walks?
We do not offer drop-in walks. All pack members must commit to a weekly schedule in order to keep consistency and structure within the pack. Typically the services must occur on the same days each week. It takes time to integrate new dogs into a pack, and a consistent schedule is important to allow dogs to understand expectations, form strong bonds with other members of the pack, and continue to practice their leash skills week after week.
Do you offer private dog walks?
We do not currently offer individual dog walks.
What is your evaluation process for adding a dog to the pack?
Every Happy Hound pack member undergoes a free one-hour evaluation and temperament test before being admitted into the pack. During the assessment we will get to know your dog, review medical and behavioral history, assess their current skills on leash, and introduce them to a balanced dog to assess their level of socialization. This meet-and-greet is designed to ensure that your pet will be a good fit for pack walks and is not a guarantee that they will be accepted for services.
When are you available for evaluations?
Evaluations for pack walks are available on a first come, first serve basis. We have availability on weekday afternoons from 2 pm to 5 pm. We also have some evening and weekend appointments available by request.
Can I select which day(s) my dog takes their walk?
No, although we do our best to accommodate requests. Our pack groups are designed around the individual dogs’ temperaments as well as their pick-up and drop-off locations. We get to know each dog individually, and do our best to place them in the pack most suitable for their unique personality—and in some instances, we may want to switch a dog into another pack to better suit their temperament. If your schedule is not flexible, please let us know ahead of time when you fill out our inquiry form so we can take this into consideration during your dog’s temperament evaluation.
How will you enter my home for pick up and drop offs?
You do not need to be home for pick up or drop off. You can provide a lock box, door key pad, or other agreed upon method. Access is required for us to provide transportation to your dog(s) as we cannot guarantee exact pick up and drop off times.
Are you insured?
Yes, we are fully insured and policy information is available by request.
Additionally, we are Fear Free certified and trained in pet first aid and CPR. We carry a first aid kit and have protocols in place in case of emergency.
